Battle Of The Bay..
  • Round Two:

I took the 5D to the Battle of the Bay this past weekend and put it through its paces in an outdoor sports setting.. I hear a lot of people complain that the 5D Mark II isn’t suited for high speed sport shooting, but I’m a firm believer that timing is the key to getting that “it” shot, not “spray and pray” shooting. Yes, the auto-focusing wasn’t as speedy as my 40D, but I had no problem getting the shots I was looking for.

As the game went on, I found myself getting more and more comfortable with the anticipation necessary to get good shots.  I also noticed the amount of post processing necessary on my 5D raw files was leaps and bounds below what I normally do to my 40D files.

My only complaint is how much I found myself wishing I could get closer to the action.  Going from an APS-C sensor to full frame shooting is a very noticeable difference, and it’s going to take some getting used to!  One day i’ll have the money saved up to buy that f/ 2.8 400mm L glass, but for now, i’ll be content with cropping my 5D files or trusting my 40D to get me close enough with the f/ 2.8 70-200mm.

I also shot plenty of video.. Check out the coverage from the game:
